William Onyeabor is a bit of an enigma in the world of afro-beat. From Enegu he went to Russia to study cinematography before returning to Nigeria in the 70s to set up his own film and music company,Wilfilms.
Onyeabor’s sound is one that mixes experimental synthersiers with afro beat, funk, and traditional music, fused with moral lessons to the people of Africa. Just take a listen to “Better Change Your Mind”, a warning to the powerful nations that be. “Love Me Know” has a hypnotic quality to it. The synths alone will make you want to get up,grab a body, and dance with abadonment into the night.

Even as a pioneer of afro electronica, his unpopularity didn’t come as a shock. Coming from a different tangent, he set himself apart from his contemporaries, leading to him being overlooked during the afro-music revival. So weird and funky. Perhaps someone will explore his music someday.Dbanj?
